Description
Blue Gum – Hard, Beautiful Australian Hardwood
Overview
Blue Gum is a respected Australian hardwood, much loved by woodturners and cabinetmakers for its consistent quality and attractive finish. In skip dressed form, both faces are lightly machined—not fully dressed, but smooth enough to reveal some of the timber’s natural grain and colour.
Colour and Grain
-
Typical Colour: Pale to medium pink, often deepening to subtle reddish brown or light honey tones as the wood ages.
-
Grain: Generally straight, although can sometimes show gentle interlocking. Gum veins are common and add unique natural character.
-
Texture: Moderately coarse and even, resulting in a refined finish when polished.
Properties and Advantages
-
Hardness: Blue Gum is relatively hard and dense, making it ideal for heavy-duty furniture and specialty items.
-
Finish: Polishes up to a smooth, high-quality sheen, highlighting both its rich colour and grain.
-
Workability: Cabinets and large furniture pieces benefit from its stability and uniform texture, while smaller turned items are enhanced by its durability and distinctive appearance.
-
Versatility: Suitable for both large-scale furniture and intricate specialty work.
Sizes and Availability
-
Available in various thicknesses and lengths, with skip dressed surfaces and DAR (Dressed All Round) options offered.
-

It’s smart to select slightly larger blanks than you need—you can always trim excess, but you can’t add material later.

For oversized projects, consider laminating multiple pieces to achieve your desired dimensions.
