Fijian Mahogany Timber – Premium Plantation Hardwood for Furniture & Decking

Overview

Fijian Mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) represents premium plantation-grown hardwood from government-managed forests in Fiji. This genuine mahogany species originates from Central American seeds planted in the 1960s. Today, Fiji maintains over 40,000 hectares of sustainable mahogany plantations. Additionally, this timber avoids CITES restrictions that affect South American mahogany. As a result, woodworkers access authentic mahogany without environmental concerns.

Colour and Appearance

The heartwood displays pinkish to pale brown tones with attractive reddish-brown streaks throughout. Over time, exposure deepens the colour to rich red or brown naturally. In contrast, the sapwood appears light pink to yellow-brown, creating clear definition. The timber features straight to wavy grain patterns with occasional attractive figure. Furthermore, the texture ranges from medium to uniform with moderate natural lustre. Quarter-sawn surfaces reveal beautiful ray patterns that enhance its decorative appeal.

Properties and Performance

Fijian Mahogany offers moderate density at 570-650 kg/m³ when seasoned. The Janka hardness rates at 800-900 lbf, providing excellent durability for demanding applications. It demonstrates low shrinkage properties with tangential shrinkage at 2.5% and radial shrinkage at 1.6%. Moreover, it achieves Class 2 durability rating for above-ground applications with 20+ year lifespan. The timber resists rot, decay, and insect attack naturally. However, it benefits from treatment for ground contact applications. Therefore, it performs exceptionally in exterior and marine environments.

Perfect Applications

Fijian Mahogany excels in diverse applications:

  • High-quality furniture and cabinetry

  • Exterior decking and weatherboards

  • Interior flooring and panelling

  • Boat building and marine applications

  • Musical instruments utilising acoustic properties

  • Joinery and architectural millwork

  • Carving and turned objects

  • Decorative veneers and plywood

Designers particularly favour it for projects requiring weather resistance and visual appeal. Consequently, it creates stunning results in both interior and exterior settings.

Working Characteristics

Fijian Mahogany machines beautifully with both hand and power tools. It cuts cleanly and holds fine detail exceptionally well. The timber planes, sands, and shapes easily without significant tool dulling. Additionally, it turns excellently on the lathe, producing smooth surfaces for detailed work. It glues, nails, and screws well with minimal splitting when pre-drilled. The wood accepts stains, paints, and finishes superbly, allowing versatile finishing options. However, figured grain sections may cause slight tear-out, so sharp tools work best. Overall, it responds predictably to most woodworking techniques.
