New Guinea Rosewood Timber – Premium Exotic Hardwood for Luxury Furniture

Overview

New Guinea Rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus) is a highly sought-after hardwood prized for its rich colour, superb workability, and striking figure. This timber originates from Southeast Asia, Papua New Guinea, and northern Australia, and is also known by names such as Amboyna, Narra, Lingua, Padauk, Angsana, and Sena. Renowned for premium furniture and artisan joinery, New Guinea Rosewood’s aesthetic appeal and performance make it a favourite among designers and master craftspeople.

Colour and Appearance

The heartwood varies from a warm golden-yellow, honey brown, or yellow-brown to deep brick red and dark blood red, with vivid streaks and prominent figuring. The variable, interlocked, or wavy grain – sometimes producing “burrs” (Amboyna) – offers unique fiddleback, ripple, or mottle effects. Sapwood is pale yellow and typically up to 60mm wide. The timber displays a medium to coarse texture, with freshly cut wood giving off a pleasant fragrance.

Properties and Performance

New Guinea Rosewood is moderately dense (650–850 kg/m³) with a Janka hardness of 4.7–7.0 kN, making it strong yet easy to work. It is naturally termite and decay resistant, achieving above-ground durability Class 2 (15–40 years). Shrinkage is very low (approx. 2% tangential, 1% radial), so movement is minimal after installation. While the heartwood is hard to stain, it polishes to a lustrous, golden finish and has excellent stability. It is not susceptible to major warping or checking and is favoured for both interior and protected exterior uses.

Perfect Applications

Craftsmen and designers use New Guinea Rosewood for:

  • High-end furniture (tables, chairs, cabinets, storage)

  • Decorative veneers and luxury panelling

  • Fine joinery, custom doors, and window frames

  • Unique turned objects and instrument-making

  • Boatbuilding and marine components

  • Flooring, feature walls, and specialty items

Its stunning appearance and performance make it ideal for showpiece pieces and luxury interiors.

Working Characteristics

New Guinea Rosewood is easy to work with both hand and machine tools, producing smooth surfaces and sharp details. The grain responds well to sanding, carving, and turning, and it nails, screws, and glues admirably. The wood polishes to a high lustre and takes oils and finishes extremely well, accentuating its vibrant colour and figure. While it may leach yellow oils if exposed to water, this can be managed by weathering or sealing. For best results, finish promptly after machining.
