NSW Blackbutt Timber – Premium Australian Hardwood for Furniture & Interior Joinery

Overview

NSW Blackbutt (Eucalyptus pilularis), also called Coastal Blackbutt or Pink Blackbutt, is a prized Australian hardwood. Native to coastal regions from southern New South Wales to Queensland, this timber stands out for its strength, versatility, and warm, modern appeal. Woodworkers and designers choose it for durable, attractive furniture and custom joinery. Its consistent supply and plantation potential also support sustainable design.

Colour and Appearance

The heartwood of NSW Blackbutt ranges from golden yellow to pale brown with occasional pinkish hues, offering a distinctive contemporary look. Its sapwood is even paler but not always easily distinguishable. The grain runs mostly straight, with a smooth, even texture that finishes well and highlights the wood’s natural beauty. Character marks like occasional gum veins add charm without compromising quality. Over time, Blackbutt’s honeyed tones deepen, suiting a wide range of interiors from coastal to classic styles.

Properties and Performance

NSW Blackbutt is a dense hardwood (around 930 kg/m³) with excellent strength and toughness. The Janka hardness of 8.9 kN makes it highly resistant to dents and wear, ideal for furniture that sees daily use. Above-ground, it is rated as Class 1 for durability and shows natural resistance to termites and lyctid borer. The timber accepts stains, polishes, and oils very well, enabling a smooth, professional finish. Its fire-resistant properties also broaden its suitability for Australian homes.

Perfect Applications

Australian designers and makers use Blackbutt for:

  • High-quality furniture – tables, chairs, beds, storage pieces

  • Custom cabinetry and shelving

  • Joinery and built-in features

  • Bench tops and work surfaces

  • Decorative wall panelling and ceiling details

  • Interior doors and stair components

  • Feature pieces for both contemporary and classic homes

Its elegant grain and robust properties make it the go-to option for beautiful, long-lasting furniture and detailed interior fit-outs.

Working Characteristics

Blackbutt machines smoothly and is easy to sand, polish, and finish. It glues well and holds joints solidly. Pre-drilling is recommended for nailing and screwing to prevent splitting. The timber accepts a wide variety of finishes, including clear lacquers, natural oils, and stains, which accentuate its golden tones. While the high density means sharp tools are best for smooth results, Blackbutt offers reliable performance for custom furniture and joinery work.
