Description
Brazilian Bloodwood (Brosimum rubescens)
Brazilian Bloodwood is a stunningly vibrant hardwood that lives up to its name. You will immediately notice its rich, deep red colour, which can range from a bright, fresh crimson to a deeper, brownish-red as it ages. The wood possesses a fine, straight grain and a beautiful natural lustre, giving it a smooth, luxurious feel. When you want to make a bold statement with natural colour, you choose Bloodwood.
Perfect for Box Making:
You can use the vivid red of Bloodwood to create striking and valuable boxes that command attention. Its density and fine texture make it an excellent choice for projects requiring precision and a high-end feel. Use this timber for:
- Creating dramatic jewellery and keepsake boxes.
- Adding powerful red accents, inlays, and feature strips.
- Crafting small, turned lidded containers with a brilliant sheen.
- Any project where you desire a deep, natural red without using dyes or stains.
Working Properties:
You will find Bloodwood to be dense and sometimes challenging, but the results are well worth the effort.
- Workability: This dense wood has a moderate to high blunting effect on tools, so we recommend you use sharp, durable blades (carbide is ideal). The timber can be brittle and prone to chipping, so use care during machining operations, especially routing.
- Finishing: Bloodwood sands to a very smooth, high polish. To best preserve the brilliant red colour, apply a finish with UV inhibitors, as the wood will darken to a brownish-red with prolonged exposure to light. It accepts oils, waxes, and clear film finishes beautifully.
- Gluing: The wood’s density can make gluing a challenge. Ensure you prepare the joint surfaces by lightly scuffing or wiping them with a solvent just before applying glue to achieve a strong bond.
- Aroma: The wood gives off a pleasant, subtle scent when you work it.
