Jarrah Timber – Rare Australian Hardwood for Premium Furniture & Interiors

Overview

Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) is one of Australia’s most famous hardwoods. It stands out due to its deep red colour, strength, and bold natural grain. For many years, furniture makers and architects have chosen Jarrah to create statement furniture, specialist joinery, and unique interiors. Now, this once-common timber is on the restricted species list and will not be available for much longer. Because remaining stocks are limited, using Jarrah in your next project means creating something truly rare and special.

Colour and Appearance

Jarrah has warm red to deep brown tones. You might also notice pink, burgundy, and even chocolate streaks. Its even grain usually runs straight, but can sometimes wave, producing stunning patterns. Some planks show gum lines or curly “fiddleback” figure, which makes each piece unique. Over time, Jarrah’s colours darken, creating even more depth and character.

Properties and Performance

This timber is hard and dense, which makes it very strong and long-lasting. Above ground, it can last for decades—up to 40 years in some cases. It resists rot, termites, and fire, so it’s safe and reliable for both furniture and interiors. While Jarrah is easy to glue, screw, and finish, you should use sharp tools for the best results. Regular pre-drilling helps when fixing nails or screws, and seasoning ensures it stays straight and stable.

Perfect Applications

Jarrah is perfect for:

  • Bespoke and classic furniture

  • Luxury cabinetry and storage

  • Feature wall panelling and built-in joinery

  • Flooring, stairs, and eye-catching trim

  • Artistic turning and handmade gifts

Because logging is ending soon, Jarrah is becoming a collector’s choice. In the near future, you may only be able to source this beautiful hardwood from recycled materials.

Working Characteristics

Jarrah is strong, but it works well with patience and quality tools. Sanding and finishing bring out its natural colour and grain, so your project shines. You can finish it with wax, oil, or a clear coat for a rich, warm appearance. As stocks run out, every project is unique and valuable.
