The Timber Selection Process

The best way to choose your timber is to visit our store in Mulgrave, where you can see and feel hundreds of timber species in person. We welcome both school visits and individual students—come and chat with our knowledgeable staff and explore the options available!

Can’t make it in person? No problem! Here’s how to choose the best timber for your project:

Set Your Priorities
Consider what matters most for your project—weight, durability, price, and appearance.

  • Building a dining table? You’ll want something durable but not too heavy to move.

  • Creating a jewellery box? Visual appeal might be your main focus, and weight or strength could be less important.

  • Don’t forget: budget is always a key factor!

Understand Timber’s Natural Imperfections
Remember, timber is a natural product—each piece is unique! You might find gum veins, knots, holes, small splits, or colour variations. Some species are more variable than others.

We do our best to select the finest pieces for you, but natural features are part of the timber’s character and can’t always be avoided.
