Jarrah Timber – Premium Durable Hardwood for Structural and Decorative Use
Overview
Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) is a renowned Australian hardwood native to the southwest of Western Australia. Celebrated for its strength, durability, and rich reddish-brown hues, Jarrah is widely used both structurally and decoratively. From flooring and decking to furniture and marine applications, its versatility and natural resistance to decay, termites, fire, and marine borers make it a favoured choice for demanding indoor and outdoor projects.
Colour and Appearance
Jarrah’s heartwood ranges from deep reds and mahogany tones to warm browns, often deepening with exposure over time. The sapwood contrasts with pale yellow to pinkish hues. It typically has a moderately coarse and even texture with grain that can be straight, wavy, or interlocked, occasionally showing attractive fiddleback figure. This rich coloration and varied grain patterns lend warmth and character to architectural, furniture, and flooring projects.
Properties and Performance
Jarrah is a high-density hardwood, averaging around 820–835 kg/m³, with a Janka hardness of approximately 8.5 kN, which gives it excellent strength and wear resistance. It is classified as very durable for decay resistance and highly resistant to insect attack, making it suitable for heavy-duty uses. Jarrah also demonstrates natural fire resistance, complying with bushfire standards, and offers good resistance to rot and marine borer damage. Though its density and interlocked grain can make machining somewhat challenging, it turns, glues, and finishes well with expert handling.
Perfect Applications
Jarrah is commonly used for:
-
Flooring and decking for high-traffic and outdoor areas
-
Structural framing, bridges, and railway sleepers
-
Outdoor furniture and cladding
-
Fine joinery, cabinetry, and premium furniture
-
Marine applications where durability is critical
-
Decorative veneers and turning blanks, especially prized for jarrah burl with its swirling grain and rich color
Working Characteristics
Jarrah requires sharp tools due to its density and interlocked grain, which can blunt cutting edges moderately. It responds well to turning, sanding, and finishing processes, with a fine polish revealing its warm hues and grain character. The wood holds detail and shape well when turned, making it a great choice for durable, aesthetic wood-turned objects, though patience is needed with interlocked grain sections.
Why Jarrah is Great for Wood Turning
Jarrah’s combination of density, strength, and rich coloration makes it excellent for wood turning. Its hardness provides durability to hold fine details, while its natural oils and stable structure aid smooth cutting and finishing. The occasional fiddleback and burl sections provide eye-catching figure, prized in turned bowls, pens, and decorative items. Despite the need for sharp tools and careful handling, expert woodworkers benefit from its ability to produce striking, long-lasting turned pieces.
