Jarrah (Eucalyptus marginata) is a Western Australian hardwood known for its deep red-brown colour and exceptional density and durability. It’s one of the most recognisable timbers in the country — heavy, tight-grained and tough enough to have been used historically for everything from railway sleepers to ship building, while also being fine-grained enough for good furniture.Colour and character: Jarrah’s heartwood deepens from a rich red-brown to a darker chocolate tone with age and UV exposure. The grain is generally straight with an interlocked figure that can produce attractive fiddleback on some boards. It’s a genuinely hard, dense timber, so it takes a bit more effort with hand tools than softer species, but it rewards that effort with a superb finish. What it’s good forJarrah is a go-to for flooring, decking and other outdoor structures thanks to its natural durability and termite resistance, but it’s equally at home indoors — furniture, joinery, feature beams and turned pieces all suit the timber’s colour and weight. If you want a timber that reads as solid and substantial, Jarrah does that better than most.We hold Jarrah as dressed boards and sawn timber in a range of sizes suited to both structural and furniture-grade work. Given the demand for it in decking and flooring, stock and sizing move — call ahead if you need a specific quantity or dimension. We’ve been a specialty timber merchant since 1969 and stock Jarrah for tradespeople and hobbyists alike.
