QLD Silky Oak

Queensland Silky Oak (Cardwellia sublimis) is a rainforest hardwood native to north Queensland, and although it shares a common name with NSW Silky Oak, it’s a different species entirely — different genus, different grain, its own distinct look. If you’re after one specifically, it’s worth confirming which you need before ordering.Colour and character: QLD Silky Oak has a warm pinkish to reddish-brown heartwood with a pronounced silky fleck figure, generally considered even more pronounced and lustrous than its NSW counterpart. It’s a timber that photographs well but is even better in person, where the fleck catches the light across the board. What it’s good forQLD Silky Oak is well suited to fine furniture, cabinetry and feature joinery, and turns nicely for bowls and platters where the figure can be shown off across a curved face. It’s a timber cabinet makers reach for when they want genuine visual interest without heavy figure or wild colour variation. We stock QLD Silky Oak as dressed boards, sawn timber and turning blanks, in the sizes that come through with each supply run — as with any specialty native species, it pays to check current stock before committing to a project. We’ve been a specialty timber merchant since 1969, and QLD Silky Oak is one of the native hardwoods we’ve stocked consistently over that time.
