Plantation mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) has carried the body of the set-neck electric guitar since the 1950s. This is that timber, milled to electric body proportions and supplied sawn, ready for the template.

Warm reddish-brown heartwood, straight to slightly interlocked grain, light for its strength. The combination that gives a mahogany body its characteristic sustain and neck-through warmth. CITES-compliant plantation supply, the same botanical species that built the tradition.

Why Mahogany for Guitar Bodies

Gibson anchored the Les Paul, SG, and ES series on mahogany for reasons that have held for seventy years: the species is light, resonant, and dimensionally stable once dry. It carves cleanly with sharp gouges, holds routed cavities without blowout, and takes carve-top work without complaint. Oil finishes lift the warm tone of the heartwood; nitro and poly are equally at home over a pore-filled surface. We hold body-grade pieces until the stock warrants listing, this run is ready to go.

Working Properties

• Hardness: Soft to medium. Comfortable under gouges and router bits; holds chisel detail well in routed cavities.
• Grain: Straight to slightly interlocked, even texture. Predictable under routers and body templates.
• Machining: Cuts cleanly with sharp carbide tooling. Glues and screws well. Takes carved tops and contour work without complaint.
• Surface: Supplied rough-sawn. Dress one face true before templating or glue-up.
• Finishing: Rustins Danish oil gives a warm hand-rubbed result straight onto sanded timber. Pore-fill and spray with nitro for the classic route.
