American Black Cherry – Premium Quality Hardwood

Overview

American Black Cherry (Prunus serotina) stands as one of North America’s finest cabinet woods. This premium hardwood comes from the eastern United States, particularly Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and New York. Furniture makers and woodworkers choose it for high-end projects. Additionally, it delivers both exceptional beauty and reliable performance in every application.

Colour and Appearance

The heartwood ranges from light pink to rich reddish-brown when freshly milled. Over time, UV light deepens the colour into a warm russet tone. In contrast, the sapwood appears as a creamy white to pale yellow, creating clear definition from the heartwood. Furthermore, the timber features a fine, uniform grain with a smooth, satiny texture. Natural brown pith flecks and small gum pockets add distinctive character. Some boards even display beautiful curly or wavy patterns that create stunning visual effects under clear finishes.

Properties and Performance

American Black Cherry offers a medium density of 561 kg/m³ at 12% moisture content. The Janka hardness rates at 950 lbf, similar to walnut. It provides medium strength and good shock resistance. Moreover, it works well for steam bending when done carefully. Once properly kiln-dried, the timber shows excellent stability. Tangential shrinkage measures approximately 7%. Total volume shrinkage reaches 9.20% from green to 6% moisture content. The heartwood resists decay very well. However, woodworkers primarily choose it for interior applications. It performs exceptionally in controlled indoor environments.

Perfect Applications

American Black Cherry excels in premium interior projects:

  • Fine furniture and high-end cabinetmaking

  • Kitchen cabinets and custom millwork

  • Interior doors and architectural panelling

  • High-quality joinery and mouldings

  • Musical instruments with excellent acoustic properties

  • Woodturning and detailed carving projects

  • Flooring for bedrooms and low-traffic areas

  • Boat interiors and decorative veneers

Designers favour its rich colour for luxury residential and commercial spaces. As a result, it creates warmth and elegance in any setting.

Working Characteristics

Black Cherry ranks among the best woods for overall workability. Both hand and power tools work beautifully with this timber. It machines easily and produces clean cuts. Therefore, you can create crisp joinery details for dovetails and decorative treatments. It planes, nails, and glues excellently. You can sand and polish it to a superb smooth finish with minimal effort. The timber responds well to any technique or tooling. However, maintain consistent feed rates with power tools to prevent burning. Also, use a sanding sealer or gel-based stain to avoid blotchy results. Its moderate hardness preserves cutting tools while holding fine details perfectly.
