Product Details
Macrocarpa (Cupressus macrocarpa), known internationally as Monterey Cypress, milled from mature Australian farm shelterbelts. Golden-tan heartwood, tight ring structure from slow farm growth, a faint cedar-resin scent that persists after milling. Light for its strength, stable under seasonal change, forgiving with nails and screws.
At 25×75mm, this section works as furniture rails, light framing, and joinery stock for the builder who wants something better than radiata without the cost of hardwood.
Why Macrocarpa
The windbreaks planted across southern Australia from the late 1800s onward are now mature trees working through the mill. Slow farm growth produces the tight, even ring structure that separates this stock from fast-plantation softwood. The grain is straight, the density is consistent, and the natural cypress oils give the timber an inherent resistance to moisture and decay that radiata doesn’t carry. For furniture rails, outdoor framing, and shelving where you want character without complexity, Macrocarpa earns its place.
Working Properties
- Hardness: Soft. Light, easy on tooling, comfortable for hand work over long sessions.
- Grain: Straight, even, with the consistent ring structure of slow farm growth. Machines cleanly.
- Machining: Holds nails and screws near ends without splitting. Glues well with PVA. Occasional resin pockets; plane or scrape past them, not structural.
- Surface: Supplied rough-sawn. Dress one face true before joinery layout or glue-up.
- Finishing: Indoor: Rustins Danish oil or clear lacquer. Outdoor: prime and paint, or use an exterior oil for weather resistance.

Limited Stock, Once It’s Gone
Macrocarpa from old farm shelterbelts is finite. The windbreaks planted a century ago are working their way through the mill now and won’t be replanted at scale. These boards are old stock we’ve held for years — recovered, checked over and ready to sell. Fixed quantity, no reorders. Listed under From the Stacks. When it’s through, the listing closes with it.
Kiln dried and ready to work
All of our timber is kiln dried to Australian standards, so it arrives stable and ready to be worked.
Because timber is a natural product, not all stock is ready to send immediately. Occasionally we need to mill your timber to the size you’ve specified before dispatch.
