Why Robert Sorby

Robert Sorby has manufactured HSS tooling in Sheffield since 1828, and the sorby texturing cutter is a good example of that engineering applied to decorative work — a multi-tooth wheel machined to bite consistently across the full range of texturing patterns.

At the Lathe

Run it lightly against a spinning surface and the multiple teeth bite in sequence, building up texture without the tearing you’d get from a single-point tool. Keep both bevel faces honed and it stays crisp for a long run of work. It fits neatly alongside the rest of our turning tools, and texturing is a technique we sometimes demonstrate in our woodturning courses.
