This toolrest stem is 3/4in in diameter and 4-1/2in tall, built to take Sorby’s modular crossbars, including the external bowl rest we also stock. It’s the base component of the modular system, and this is the last of our stock.

Why Robert Sorby

Robert Sorby has built turning equipment in Sheffield since 1828, and the modular stem-and-crossbar system is a straightforward piece of that engineering, giving turners one stem that can carry several different crossbar shapes. Robert Sorby still supplies the system this way.

At the Lathe

Once fitted in the banjo, this toolrest stem lets you swap crossbars for different jobs without buying a whole new rest each time, useful if you’re setting up a lathe for general spindle and bowl work. It’s a practical addition to a set of turning tools, and stem-and-crossbar rests are the setup we run in our woodturning courses.
