Gidgee live edge slab, one only
This gidgee live edge slab is a single piece of Acacia cambagei. This piece is dark heartwood with cream sapwood along both edges and a natural through-hole near one end, the kind of feature people build a piece around. The slab in the photos is the slab you get.
What is Gidgee?
Gidgee grows slowly in the dry country of inland Queensland and New South Wales. That slow growth and harsh conditions gives one of the hardest, densest timbers in Australia, with a natural oiliness that polishes to a deep sheen.
Working a gidgee live edge slab
- Surface: Double dressed, faces only. The edges are left natural.
- Hardness: Extreme. Sharp tooling and a patient feed rate pay off.
- Grain: Tight and interlocked, with fine figure.
- Machining: Carbide tooling works best. Bond with epoxy, as the natural oils resist PVA.
- Finishing: Takes oil and wax well. We recommend Rustins Danish oil to bring up the contrast between sapwood and heartwood.
- Natural features: Bark, sapwood, checks and holes are part of the character and are shown in the photos. We recommend removing the bark before use, as it tends to fall off naturally over time.

What you see is what you get
Every slab we list is numbered, photographed front and back, and measured. The outline drawing in the gallery shows its measured shape and thickness. Sizes are approximate. Expect natural colour and figure variation. See more one-off pieces in Live Edge Slabs and the rest of our gidgee.
