Kauri

Kauri (Agathis species) is a pale, straight-grained timber long favoured by boat builders, joiners and turners for its stability and ease of working. Historically sourced from New Zealand and Queensland Kauri forests, it’s a timber with a genuine heritage in Australian building and craft — and one that’s become harder to find in good sizes as old-growth stock has thinned.Colour and character: Kauri is a pale honey to light golden-brown, with a fine, even, straight grain and very little figure to distract from its clean, uniform look. It’s soft enough to work easily but stable enough to hold fine detail, which is a rare and useful combination. What it’s good forKauri has long been prized for boat building and joinery where dimensional stability matters, and it remains a favourite among wood turners for its clean finish and predictable behaviour on the lathe. It also suits fine furniture and detail joinery work where a light, even-toned timber is called for rather than something heavily figured. We stock Kauri as dressed boards, sawn timber and turning blanks. Because good Kauri stock isn’t easy to come by in commercial quantities any more, availability can be limited — if you need a particular size for a specific project, it’s worth calling ahead rather than assuming we’ll have it on the shelf. We’ve been a specialty timber merchant since 1969, and Kauri has been part of that history for a long time — it’s a timber our older customers often ask for by name.
