Product Details
Queensland Kauri (Agathis robusta), dressed thin and wide. Pale cream to golden-yellow heartwood, fine straight grain, consistent density throughout. The timber Australian pattern-makers and foundry shops have reached for first since the early twentieth century.
At 10mm dressed thickness, this stock carries the section that panel work, fine scroll-saw work, and box lids require, thin enough to handle with care, stable enough to stay flat under light use.
Why Queensland Kauri
Queensland Kauri earned its place in pattern-making through a combination that no other softwood in Australian supply replicates cleanly: straight grain, dimensional stability, and a thin section that mills without warping. The timber holds detail under hand tools as cleanly as any softwood the trade carries, and the pale cream colour reads true under lacquer or oil without the grain bleed-through that plagues coarser species at thin dimensions. Commercial Queensland Kauri at usable panel widths is rare today, the species is no longer logged from natural forest in volume. What we hold is older inventory that has been under cover since it came through.
Working Properties
- Hardness: Soft. Light, easy on the hand, easy on tooling. Firm enough to hold an edge for fine joinery.
- Grain: Straight, fine, even. Planes cleanly, holds detail under scrapers and fretsaws.
- Machining: Cuts cleanly with sharp planes and scrapers. Thin section means heavy-handed feeding can flex the board. Use light, even passes.
- Surface: Supplied with a true reference face. Ready to mark out and cut. Handle thin stock with care.
- Finishing: Lacquer or oil both work. Rustins Danish oil warms the tone without darkening the pale colour.

Limited Stock, Once It’s Gone
Queensland Kauri at usable section is older inventory. The species is no longer logged from natural forest in volume, and this stock is what we hold under cover from an earlier arrival. Fixed quantity, no reorders. Listed under From the Stacks. When it’s through, the listing closes with it.
