NSW Silky Oak

NSW Silky Oak (Grevillea robusta) is a native Australian hardwood with a distinctive silvery-pink to reddish-brown colour and a striking silky fleck pattern across its grain — the feature that gives the timber its name and makes it instantly recognisable once you’ve worked with it. It’s a different species to Queensland Silky Oak, which we also stock separately, so it’s worth checking which one you actually need.Colour and character: The medium-density heartwood shows a fine, lustrous fleck on quarter-sawn faces that catches the light in a way few other native timbers do. It works cleanly with both hand and machine tools and takes a finish beautifully, which is why it’s held its place in fine furniture making for generations. What it’s good forNSW Silky Oak is a genuine cabinet-making timber — furniture, panelling, joinery and turned pieces all suit its figure and colour. Turners in particular like it for bowls and platters where the fleck pattern is shown to best effect across a curved surface. We stock NSW Silky Oak as dressed boards, sawn timber and turning blanks, with figured pieces coming through from time to time for anyone chasing a feature board. We’ve been a specialty timber merchant since 1969, and NSW Silky Oak is one of the native species our regulars come back for.
