Product Details
Old-growth Khaya Mahogany (Khaya spp.) at premium neck-blank dimensions. This is not the everyday mahogany the trade has been running on for the last twenty years. It’s the genuine article: mature-tree African mahogany with the density, interlocked grain, and ribbon figure that built the species’ reputation in fine guitar work decades before the commercial supply chain came to dominate.
The everyday mahogany you’ll find on most merchants’ racks is a perfectly capable neck timber. This isn’t that. Old-growth Khaya is what you reach for when the build has to carry the weight of the species’ reputation. Denser through the section, more consistent in figure, and milled at 50mm because that’s what a mature-tree log will yield straight — the depth is evidence of the provenance, not a target market. Plenty of headroom for any neck profile a builder wants to work to.
Why Old-Growth Khaya
Old-growth Khaya holds a truss-rod channel to tighter tolerances than the everyday commercial mahogany trade and carves cleaner under spokeshaves and rasps because the interlocked fibres run more consistently through a slow-grown log. The ribbon figure that comes off the worked face is the visual signature that makes the species what it is — and what most contemporary mahogany stock never develops. We held this parcel back because the grade can’t be sourced new at this provenance. Once the trade closes on a tree of this age, the timber goes with it. If you’re not sure whether this is the right stock for your build, call us before ordering.
Working Properties
- Hardness: Medium. Noticeably heavier in the hand than the everyday mahogany trade. Holds truss-rod channel walls cleanly.
- Grain: Interlocked, ribbon figure on worked faces. Read the grain before planing.
- Machining: Carves and routs cleanly with sharp tooling. Glues and screws well.
- Surface: Supplied rough-sawn. Dress one face true before marking out the truss-rod channel.
- Finishing: Rustins Danish oil works straight onto sanded timber. Many builders shellac the headstock face before colouring.
