Padauk Timber – Vibrant Durable Hardwood for Furniture and More

Overview

Padauk is a striking hardwood known for its bright reddish-orange color. Found mainly in tropical Africa and Asia, it darkens to rich reddish-brown or purplish hues over time. This wood features straight to interlocked grain and a coarse texture with a natural sheen.

Colour and Appearance

Fresh Padauk heartwood ranges from pale pinkish-orange to deep reddish-brown. The sapwood is pale yellow, providing good contrast. Some wood pieces show curly or mottled patterns that add visual depth. UV finishing helps preserve its vibrant color.

Properties and Performance

Padauk is dense and tough, weighing about 745 kg/m³. Its Janka hardness scores between 7,580 and 8,760 N, making it very hard and durable. The wood resists rot, decay, insects, and termites naturally. It dries quickly but requires careful kiln drying. Silica content can dull cutters during machining.

Applications

Padauk works well for furniture, flooring, musical instruments, cabinetry, carving, and turning. Its great durability and stability suit many indoor and outdoor uses.

Working Characteristics

Padauk is easy to machine, sand, and finish but needs sharp tools to handle its silica and interlocked grain. Filling large pores improves smoothness. It glues and stains well. Careful sanding prevents tearout in figured wood. It emits a mild odor when wet which fades when dry.

Woodturning Qualities

Padauk turns cleanly with good detail retention. Its vibrant colors and occasional figured grain produce striking finished pieces. The wood sands smooth and takes oils or clear coats beautifully. Its durability and appearance make it ideal for bowls, decorative items, and musical instrument parts.
