Product Details
Robert Sorby Shell Auger 5/16in
The shell auger is the classic long-hole boring tool for the lathe, purpose-built for drilling a straight, centred hole all the way down a turned lamp column for the flex. It’s a legacy Sheffield pattern that’s no longer in general production, and this is the last of our stock.
Why Robert Sorby
Robert Sorby has forged edge and boring tools in Sheffield since 1828, and the shell auger comes straight from that older catalogue of specialist patterns, built for a job most modern tool ranges have quietly dropped.
Specs
- 5/16in shell auger
- Lip and flat cutting face for straight, true boring
- Purpose-built for long-hole work on the lathe
- Legacy Sheffield pattern, no longer in general production
At the Lathe
Feed it slowly and withdraw often to clear waste, and the lip and flat cutting face will keep it tracking straight and true down the centre of a spindle-mounted column. It’s a specialist addition to a set of turning tools, and lamp making comes up often enough in our woodturning courses that we know this tool gets real use.
Limited Stock — While It Lasts
This is the last of our Robert Sorby shell auger stock, and once it’s sold the listing closes for good. It’s a discontinued pattern with no restock coming, so grab it while stocks last.
