Wood dust is a carcinogen. Not the dramatic kind — the slow kind, classified as Group 1 by the IARC, that builds up over years of breathing fine particles without proper extraction. Safe Work Australia’s exposure standard for hardwood dust is 1 mg/m³ averaged over an 8-hour shift. Most hobby workshops don’t meet it. Most professional shops don’t either, unless they’re running proper extraction.
A dust extractor isn’t optional safety gear — it’s the thing that makes woodworking sustainable for the long term. The question isn’t whether you need one. It’s which one.
Why Record Power?
Record Power is a UK machinery brand established in 1937. Their CGV series uses cyclonic neutral vane technology — the air spins inside the drum, throwing heavier dust particles to the outside edge while the filter handles the fine stuff. The practical result: filters stay cleaner longer, and you spend less time stopping to clean them mid-session.
Both models TT stocks run 0.5-micron filtration. That catches the particles that do the real damage — the ones fine enough to stay airborne and get into your lungs.
CGV336-4 — 55L, 2000W — $990
The everyday workhorse. Plugs into a standard 10-amp outlet — a normal wall socket. Runs at 108 litres per second (229 CFM) of airflow through a 4″ inlet. The 55-litre drum handles a full day’s turning or routing without needing to stop. Weighs 13kg and fits under a bench when not in use.
Includes 2 metres of hose and an easy-fit cuff. No electrician required.
CGV386-6 — 90L, 3000W — $1,490
The bigger unit. 90-litre drum with cyclonic separation happening inside the drum chamber itself, not just in the lid. The larger capacity means fewer stops to empty. The motor exhaust is designed for low noise output; with the optional 2½” diameter hose fitted, you can direct exhaust away from the machine, which makes a noticeable difference in a small workshop.
Requires a 15-amp outlet. Check your workshop board before ordering — most domestic workshops run 10-amp circuits, and this machine won’t plug into one without an electrician first.
Includes ZAMV 2m of 100mm dust extraction hose and DX100X easy-fit cuff.
How to choose between them
The 15-amp requirement is the main differentiator in most buying decisions. If you’ve got a standard domestic workshop with 10-amp circuits throughout, the CGV336-4 is your machine. It’s a solid extractor with real airflow — not a compromise.
If you’ve got a 15-amp circuit already in the workshop (common in garages with a dedicated sub-board, or any commercial setup), the CGV386-6 makes sense if:
- You’re running multiple machines and want to move the extractor between them without emptying as often
- You’re doing production work and downtime to empty a drum costs you money
- Noise level matters — the exhaust design on the 386 is meaningfully quieter
Both machines come with hose included and are ready to run on arrival. Both are in stock at Trend Timbers.
