Product Details

Overview

Mulga (Acacia aneura) comes from the arid interior of Australia and it is unlike most timbers you will work with. Exceptionally dense, with a fine, tight grain that often shows beautiful figuring, it produces a surface under the tool that seems almost to finish itself. The heartwood is a rich dark brown, the sapwood golden yellow, and the contrast between the two in a finished piece is striking without being forced. The name Mulga comes from the Yuwaalaraay language of north-western New South Wales, where it referred to the long narrow shields made from the wood.

Colour and Appearance

Heartwood ranges from warm chocolate-brown through to deep reddish-brown, with golden yellow to amber sapwood running alongside it. The grain is fine and tight, often with figuring and small-scale pattern that rewards a close look. The interplay between heartwood and sapwood can be dramatic in box work where both faces are visible. Once polished, Mulga has a depth of colour and surface quality that is genuinely hard to achieve with any other Australian species.

Properties and Performance

Mulga is among the hardest and densest of Australia’s native timbers. It is extremely stable in service, holds fine detail, and finishes to an exceptional, near-glass surface. The density means it responds well to sharp tooling and takes a high-lustre polish from oils, waxes, and friction finishes. Gluing produces strong, reliable joints when surfaces are well-prepared and clamped properly for the required time.

Perfect Applications

  • Ring boxes, jewellery boxes, and small keepsake chests
  • Small turned lidded boxes and vessels
  • Inlay and decorative panel work where fine grain and colour contrast are the point
  • Any small box project where you want the timber to be the statement

Working Characteristics

Mulga’s density demands sharp, high-quality tooling. Carbide-tipped blades are recommended for sawing. It machines accurately and without fuss when the tooling is up to it, but it will show up a dull edge immediately. The payoff is a surface that comes off the machine cleaner than most species manage after sanding. Sands exceptionally smoothly and accepts oil, wax, and friction finishes with outstanding results. Fine splinters from this timber are sharp, so handle offcuts with care and clean up the bench after machining.

Quality You Can Trust

Mulga is not a species we see in quantity, and box-making thickness stock in this range is rarer still. These boards are hand-selected for quality of figuring and consistency of heartwood depth. If you want to discuss your project or check what is currently in stock, come and see us at the showroom or get in touch.

Kiln dried and ready to work

All of our timber is kiln dried to Australian standards, so it arrives stable and ready to be worked.

Because timber is a natural product, not all stock is ready to send immediately. Occasionally we need to mill your timber to the size you’ve specified before dispatch.
