Description
Mulga (Acacia aneura)
Mulga, an iconic Australian hardwood, emerges from the arid interior as one of Australia’s most beautiful and sought-after native timbers. We prize it for its incredible density and striking color. The heartwood reveals a stunning range of rich, dark browns, while golden-yellow sapwood interweaves throughout, sometimes even hinting at deep reddish-brown. Furthermore, its fine, tight grain often displays beautiful figuring, making every piece uniquely spectacular.
Perfect for Box Making
Mulga’s exceptional density and mesmerizing patterns establish it as a premium choice for crafting small, valuable boxes that are destined to become heirlooms. Its fine grain and stability make it ideal for:
- High-end ring boxes, jewelry boxes, and small keepsake chests.
- Inlay and decorative details that showcase its deep, rich colors.
- Small, turned lidded boxes and other treasured items.
- Any project where you desire a glass-like, durable finish and a true piece of Australia.
Working Properties
As one of Australia’s hardest timbers, Mulga demands a patient and precise approach.
- Workability: Being extremely hard and dense, Mulga challenges hand tools. However, it machines well, but sharp, high-quality blades (carbide-tipped recommended) prove essential.
- Finishing: This is where Mulga truly excels. It sands incredibly smoothly and accepts an exceptional, high-lustre polish directly from the wood. It responds beautifully to oils and waxes, which enhance its color and depth, as well as friction polishes for a brilliant sheen.
- Gluing: It glues very well, creating strong and reliable joints.
- Splintering: Due to its hardness, fine splinters can be sharp. Therefore, exercise caution during handling and machining.
Specifications:
