Product Details

Supplied rough-sawn — this timber ships undressed. The face in these photos is dressed so you can see the grain these boards bring up; they arrive in their rough-sawn state, ready for you to dress back to your finished size.

These padauk boards don’t sit on the shelf long. Most of what comes through the door is bowl and spindle offcuts — full boards at this width are the exception. It’s a rare, limited parcel, while stocks last.

What it is. This is African Padauk, Pterocarpus soyauxii, a dense West African hardwood known for its saturated orange colour and stability once seasoned. Board-width Padauk is genuinely rare at TT.

What you’d make with these padauk boards.

  • Feature strips and accent panels in mixed-timber furniture
  • Cutting boards and charcuterie boards
  • Small tabletop inlays and box lids
  • Guitar and instrument binding stock

Working notes

  • Density: ~745 kg/m³ — dense
  • Hardness: ~7.6 kN Janka — hard, machines cleanly with sharp tooling
  • Grain: mostly straight with occasional interlocking — check for tearout when planing against the grain
  • Surface: Supplied rough-sawn — dress one face true before templating or glue-up.
  • Working: blunts edges faster than softer timbers, fine orange dust — wear a mask
  • Finishing: Danish oil deepens the colour fast; a wax topcoat with EEE-Ultra Shine slows the colour’s fade under UV

What cabinetmakers say about it. Furniture makers on the trade forums use Padauk almost exclusively as an accent timber — the colour is strong enough that a little goes a long way against oak, ash or maple.

The stack it came from. These padauk boards are old stock — they sat in the back of the shed for many years before we recovered them and got them ready to sell — this is a limited parcel and board-scale stock at this species doesn’t come around often.
