The shell auger is the classic long-hole boring tool for the lathe, purpose-built for drilling a straight, centred hole all the way down a turned lamp column for the flex. It’s a legacy Sheffield pattern that’s no longer in general production, and this is the last of our stock.

At the Lathe

Feed it slowly and withdraw often to clear waste, and the lip and flat cutting face will keep it tracking straight and true down the centre of a spindle-mounted column. It’s a specialist addition to a set of turning tools, and lamp making comes up often enough in our woodturning courses that we know this tool gets real use.
