The excelsior roughing gouge is part of Sorby’s high-performance Excelsior range, ground from high grade HSS and finished with a titanium nitride coating that holds an edge up to four times longer than standard HSS. It’s a 3/4in handled gouge, and this listing is the last of our stock.

At the Lathe

It does the same job as Sorby’s standard 843H roughing gouge, taking square or uneven spindle stock down to round with the wings held well back from the work for a safe, controlled cut. It’s for spindle work only, not bowl-grain, and the TiN coating means fewer trips to the grinder across a long session. It’s a strong addition to a set of turning tools, and the kind of tool we’d happily put in front of students in our woodturning courses.
