Tasmanian Oak

Tasmanian Oak is a well-known name in Australian furniture and flooring, though it’s worth knowing what’s actually behind the label: it’s a collective trade name covering three related eucalypt species — Alpine Ash, Messmate and Mountain Ash — rather than a single botanical species. They’re grown and milled together because they share very similar working properties and appearance, which is why the trade treats them as one timber.Colour and character: Tasmanian Oak has a pale straw to light brown heartwood, sometimes with a pinkish tinge, and a generally straight, even grain. It’s a lighter-toned hardwood than many of the darker native species, which makes it a popular choice where a bright, contemporary look is wanted. What it’s good forTasmanian Oak is a genuine all-rounder — furniture, flooring, joinery, mouldings and cabinetry all make good use of its stability and consistent colour. It machines cleanly and takes stain and clear finishes well, which is part of why it’s such a common choice for furniture makers wanting a lighter native timber without the cost of imported species. We stock Tasmanian Oak as dressed boards and sawn timber, in a range of sizes suited to furniture-making and joinery work. As a widely used commercial species, stock generally moves reasonably well — but for specific dimensions or larger quantities, it’s still worth calling ahead. We’ve been a specialty timber merchant since 1969, and Tasmanian Oak has been a consistent part of our range for furniture makers and joiners throughout that time.
