Tasmanian Blackwood

Tasmanian Blackwood (Acacia melanoxylon) is one of the most versatile Australian hardwoods we stock — and one of the most visually interesting. The colour runs from warm golden-brown through to deep chocolate, often with strong tonal shifts within a single board. Grain is generally fine and straight, but select pieces carry a fiddleback or curly figure that stops you mid-pass. It works cleanly, sands to a fine finish, and takes a polish well. For a species this obliging, it photographs beautifully too.

What it’s used for
Fine furniture and cabinetry are the natural home for Tasmanian Blackwood timber. It also has a strong following among woodturners and musical instrument builders — guitar and ukulele makers in particular value this species for both its figure and tonal qualities. Feature and decorative panels are another common application where the colour variation does the work.
