Product Details

American Walnut Timber – Premium Decorative Hardwood for Fine Furniture

Overview

American Walnut (Juglans nigra), also called Black Walnut, is a prized hardwood from North America. Its heartwood displays rich dark chocolate brown tones, contrasting beautifully with creamy white sapwood. Designers and craftsmen value it for fine furniture, cabinetry, veneers, paneling, and decorative items. The wood also features a natural luster and occasionally wavy or curly grain patterns that add distinct character.

Colour and Appearance

Heartwood ranges from light brown to deep chocolate, sometimes with purple streaks or darker markings. Sapwood usually appears creamy white. The grain is mostly straight but can be wavy or curly, creating beautiful patterns. With a medium texture and natural shine, American Walnut suits both classic and modern styles.

Properties and Performance

American Walnut is a durable medium-density hardwood (around 609 kg/m³) with a Janka hardness of about 4.4 kN. It offers good bending and crushing strength with low stiffness. The wood dries slowly, helping to avoid warping. It resists heartwood decay and machines well, including planing, turning, and moulding. The wood glues and finishes smoothly, allowing craftsmen to showcase its rich colours and grain.

Perfect Applications

American Walnut is favored for:

  • Fine furniture including tables, cabinets, and chairs

  • Architectural millwork, doors, and paneling

  • Veneers for luxury cabinetry and decorative projects

  • Turned items and carved pieces due to its fine grain and workability

  • Musical instruments and gunstocks for tonal quality and aesthetic appeal

Working Characteristics

American Walnut works easily with hand and machine tools but requires care with figured grain to prevent tearout. It sands smoothly and takes stains and polishes to a luxurious finish. Gluing and nailing produce solid bonds when done with proper preparation.

Why Walnut is Great for Wood Turning

This wood’s fine texture, balanced hardness, and attractive grain patterns make it perfect for woodturning. It holds detail without chipping and polishes to a high shine that highlights its rich tones. Artisans prefer it for bowls, pens, decorative vessels, and other turned objects due to its beauty and ease of working.
