Product Details

Overview

Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is one of the most recognised hardwoods in the world, and for woodturners it earns its reputation every time. The heartwood is dark chocolate-brown with depth that you notice before you’ve even switched on the lathe. The grain runs mostly straight, occasionally wandering into gentle waves or curl that add character without complicating the work. These blanks are sized for spindle turning: 45mm and 75mm square, 300mm long, dimensioned to mount straight onto the lathe without prep.

Colour and Appearance

Heartwood ranges from light brown through to deep chocolate, with occasional purple or grey streaks depending on the log. Sapwood is creamy white and sharply distinct from the dark core — some turners work this contrast into the piece deliberately. The natural lustre of walnut wood comes up beautifully under oil, turning the already-rich colour several shades deeper and revealing the grain in full.

Properties and Performance

A moderately dense hardwood with good bending strength and low stiffness, Black Walnut dries slowly and holds its dimension well once seasoned. It resists heartwood decay and machines reliably, behaving consistently across cuts with sharp tooling. The surface planes and sands without gumming and accepts a wide range of finishes.

Perfect Applications

  • Turned bowls, vessels, and hollow forms
  • Pens and small spindle work
  • Decorative objects and sculptural pieces
  • Carved items where fine detail and surface quality matter

Working Characteristics

Black Walnut works well with both hand and machine tools, though figured grain deserves care to avoid tearout on the lathe. It sands smoothly and takes polish to a deep shine that draws out the richness of the dark heartwood. Oil is the finish of choice for walnut wood: penetrating oil enhances the colour and grain without flattening the surface, leaving the piece with the kind of hand-feel that makes a good bowl worth picking up twice. Gluing and fastening produce solid results when surfaces are properly prepared.

Quality You Can Trust

We carry Black Walnut turning blanks because they are asked for, and because the timber delivers on what the colour promises. Hand-selected for turning quality, each blank is assessed for grain consistency and structural integrity before it goes on the shelf. Come and see us at the showroom or get in touch if you want to discuss species, sizing, or your project.

Kiln dried and ready to work

All of our timber is kiln dried to Australian standards, so it arrives stable and ready to be worked.

Because timber is a natural product, not all stock is ready to send immediately. Occasionally we need to mill your timber to the size you’ve specified before dispatch.
