Description

Mahogany – Premium Plantation Hardwood

Overview

Mahogany is one of the world’s most prestigious timbers, valued for centuries for its rich colour, durability, and exceptional workability. Originally from South America, today’s Mahogany is ethically plantation grown in Fiji to ensure sustainability and meet the increasing global demand.

The tropical climate of Fiji has allowed these plantations to thrive, producing high-quality timber with consistent grain and colour — making it a perfect fit for fine woodworking projects.

Supplied in rough sawn form, Mahogany is presented exactly as cut from the log, giving you maximum material for dressing and shaping to your needs.

Appearance and Character

  • Colour Range: Warm reddish-brown to deep mahogany red, often darkening beautifully with age and polishing.

  • Grain: Mostly straight, with a fine to medium texture and occasional interlocking for decorative effect.

  • Lustre: Natural soft sheen that enhances with finishing.

Properties and Advantages

While technically a hardwood, plantation-grown Mahogany works with the ease of softer carving woods. It holds details beautifully, planes smoothly, and sands to a fine finish.

Recently, it has also been found to have natural termite resistance, making it an excellent choice for Australian woodworkers needing both beauty and durability.

Common Uses

Mahogany is a versatile timber used across both functional and artistic projects:

  • Fine furniture and cabinetry

  • Joinery and interior panelling

  • Wood-turning and wood-carving

  • Boat, kayak, and marine applications

  • Musical instrument making (especially guitars)
