Overview
This mahogany is from a private collection we acquired before 1990. It is old growth stock in the truest sense: timber that was felled, milled, and held long before the species became difficult to source. The heartwood has the depth of colour and dimensional stability that only comes from old, slow-grown timber. We do not get material like this in often, and when this lot is gone, that is it.
Colour and Appearance
Heartwood runs from deep reddish-brown through to warm mahogany red, darkening further with age and exposure. The grain is straight and even with occasional interlocking figure, and the texture is fine to medium. Worked faces develop a natural lustre that responds well to oil and wax finishes. Sapwood, where present, is lighter and clearly defined.
Properties and Performance
Old growth mahogany has excellent dimensional stability with low movement in service. It is naturally termite-resistant and presents few problems in the workshop: it glues cleanly, accepts stains and clear finishes without blotching, and takes fine detail without chipping or tearout. The density of old growth stock gives a satisfying weight in the hand and a quality of surface you notice the moment you take it off the lathe.
Perfect Applications
- Turned bowls, vessels, and hollow forms
- Decorative spindle work and finials
- Carved pieces and sculptural work
- High-quality handles and small decorative items
Working Characteristics
Machines cleanly with sharp tooling. Takes detail well on the lathe and responds to both hand and power tools without difficulty. Finishes to a smooth, lustrous surface with oil, wax, or lacquer. The straight grain means predictable behaviour through cuts, with only occasional interlocking grain to watch in figured sections.
Quality You Can Trust
We hold this material because it represents what mahogany was before the old growth was gone. If you want to discuss which size suits your project or whether we can accommodate specific requirements, come and see us or send us a note.

Kiln dried and ready to work
All of our timber is kiln dried to Australian standards, so it arrives stable and ready to be worked.
Because timber is a natural product, not all stock is ready to send immediately. Occasionally we need to mill your timber to the size you’ve specified before dispatch.
