Product Details
NSW Sassafras (Doryphora sassafras) from the rainforest gullies of coastal New South Wales and southern Queensland. The camphor-scented rainforest cousin to Tasmanian Sassafras (Atherosperma moschatum), a different species, same aromatic character, cut from slower-growing coastal gully trees.
Warm golden-brown heartwood, tight fine grain, and a distinct spicy camphor scent that persists for years after finishing. Milled to short panel and box-making proportions. The slow growth of the shaded gully environment leaves even, predictable timber that takes carving detail with quiet precision.
Why NSW Sassafras
Australian woodworkers who know Tasmanian Sassafras (the blackheart species common in AU furniture, turning, and fine box work) will find NSW Sassafras familiar in character. Both carry the aromatic camphor note that makes them distinctive in the workshop. NSW Sassafras is darker in the heartwood, the gully growth giving a slightly denser, finer-grained result than the open-forest Tas Sassy most turners know. For box lids, carved relief panels, and small cabinet components where the scent adds to the value of the finished piece, this stock is hard to match from Australian supply.
