Product Details

This pomatia box timber planes like it wants to be a box lid. Pomatia comes off the saw with a fine, even texture that box makers value — no fighting the grain to get a clean seam.

What it is. Pomatia is the trade name for Pometia pinnata, sold as Taun in the Pacific and North American trade. It’s a mid-density hardwood grown across the Pacific islands and used across the region for furniture and joinery wherever a stable, even-textured timber is needed.

What you’d make with this pomatia box timber at 15×130×900.

  • Box lids, sides and bases — the size this parcel is cut for
  • Small drawer fronts and jewellery box components
  • Panel inlays and box-making feature strips
  • Small cabinet door panels

Working notes

  • Density: ~700 kg/m³ — medium, comparable in the hand to meranti
  • Hardness: rated moderately hard on the Queensland timber-properties register — comfortably below rosewood, above hoop pine in the hand
  • Grain: fine and even, mostly straight with an occasional gentle wave
  • Surface: Supplied with a true reference face — ready to template, mark out, or glue.
  • Working: planes and sands cleanly, glues without fuss, holds a crisp mitre for box joints
  • Finishing: responds well to EEE-Ultra Shine for a hand-buffed lustre on finished boxes

The stack it came from. This pomatia box timber is old stock — it sat in the back of the shed for many years before we recovered it and got it ready to sell — it’s a limited parcel that doesn’t come through often at this size. Have a look through our full Pomatia range or the box making wood category for more small-format stock. Once it goes, the listing closes.
