Product Details
Plantation mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla) milled to neck dimensions. The same species that has carried set-neck and bolt-on electric necks since the 1950s, in a section that works for both.
Reddish-brown heartwood, straight to slightly interlocked grain, light in the hand. The combination that delivers the stiffness-to-weight ratio guitar necks rely on. CITES-compliant plantation supply, ready for the carve.
Why Mahogany for Guitar Necks
A mahogany neck is warm, stable, and predictable under the spokeshave and rasp. The species carves cleanly from rough sawn to final profile without fighting you on direction changes, holds a truss-rod channel to tight tolerances, and glues reliably at the heel joint. At 35mm, this stock is set-neck territory for standard electrics and acoustic necks for smaller-body instruments. Grain runs cleanly down the long axis, the orientation that gives the neck its stiffness-to-weight advantage. We hold the cleanest pieces for the builds that need them.
Working Properties
- Hardness: Soft to medium. Comfortable under hand tools; holds fret slots and truss-rod channels without crumbling.
- Grain: Straight to slightly interlocked, fine even texture. Finishes to a smooth surface under sharp tools.
- Machining: Carves cleanly with spokeshaves and rasps. Takes radius work without tearout when grain is read correctly.
- Surface: Supplied rough-sawn. Dress one face true before marking out scale length and truss-rod channel.
- Finishing: Rustins Danish oil for a hand-rubbed neck feel. Shellac or nitro over the back for a vintage look.
