NSW Rosewood (Dysoxylum fraserianum) from the rainforest gullies of coastal New South Wales and southern Queensland. Deep red heartwood, fine close grain, and the distinctive smoky-spicy scent that comes off the cut surface. Dense, even, predictable on the lathe.

Available in two lengths at the same 70×70mm cross-section. The shorter pieces are the classic small-work turning scale: handles, knobs, stoppers, pen blanks, chess pieces. The longer pieces open up for spindle work at furniture-leg and baluster dimensions.

Why NSW Rosewood

NSW Rosewood anchored the Australian colonial furniture trade for good reason. The deep red heartwood, the scent that lingers through the finished piece, the density that gives handles and knobs a reassuring weight in the hand, these are not incidental qualities, they are the species. Fine, close grain leaves a near-finished surface straight from a sharp gouge, which means less sanding and a cleaner result on small-detail work. From the rainforest gullies of coastal NSW, grown slowly, harvested selectively. We don’t get this in often. Short turning stock from this species is rare in commercial supply now, and the longer lengths are rarer still.

Working Properties

• Hardness: Dense. Firm under the hand, the weight is part of the appeal for hand-tool grips and small turned objects. Holds beads and coves crisply.
• Grain: Tight, close, fine texture. Leaves a near-finished surface straight from a sharp gouge.
• Turning: Cuts cleanly with sharp tools, both carbide insert and skew. Minimal sanding required at the lathe. The scent rises as the tool engages.
• Surface: Supplied rough-sawn square section. Mount between centres and rough to round.
• Finishing: Rustins Danish oil applied on the lathe brings the red tone forward. Shellawax Cream for a quick high-gloss finish on small items.
