Robert Sorby ProEdge Zirconium Belt – 60 grit
Our ProEdge zirconium belt 60 grit is the belt to reach for when a tool needs more than a touch-up. Zirconium fractures as it wears, exposing fresh cutting grain instead of glazing over, so it keeps working long after aluminium oxide has given up.
What the zirconium belt 60 grit is for
Heavy stock removal on high speed steel and carbon steel. Reprofiling a bowl gouge, grinding the chips out of a chisel that met a nail, squaring up a skew that has drifted out of true. This is the coarse end of the range, so treat it as a starting belt rather than a finishing one. Robert Sorby make these in Sheffield to the same 775mm x 50mm size as every other belt in the range.
Where it sits in the range
- Zirconium belt 60 grit — reprofiling, damage repair and reshaping a bevel from scratch.
- Zirconium belt 120 grit — the everyday sharpening belt for high speed steel turning tools.
- Aluminium oxide 240 grit — refining the bevel on carbon steel chisels and plane irons.
- Trizact 600 and finer — honing to a polished edge.
Fitting the zirconium belt 60 grit
775mm x 50mm, the standard ProEdge size, so it fits every ProEdge and ProEdge Deluxe machine. Run it dry. The belt speed carries the heat away from the tool, which is the whole point of a linisher over a dry grinder, though a light hand still gives the cleanest result. Abrasive belts are consumables and are not covered by the Sorby lifetime guarantee.
