Jelutong Carving Blank — 150 x 75 x 300mm
A single narrow blank: 150mm wide, 75mm thick, 300mm long. This is the handy size — small enough to hold and work at the bench, big enough for a proper piece. Same timber as our wider boards, just less of it, so it is the easiest way into jelutong if you have not cut it before.
Why carvers reach for jelutong
Jelutong (Dyera costulata) has one of the finest, most even grains you will find in a carving timber. It is soft and low density, so it is gentle on gouges and chisels, and it holds crisp detail in beads, coves and sculpted edges without tearing out. There is almost no figure to fight and no hard latewood bands to deflect a cut, which is why it has been the standard pattern-making and carving timber in workshops here for decades.
It sands to a silky finish and takes paint, stain or oil evenly, and the pale cream colour gives you a clean canvas for inlay work or contrast timbers. It glues and laminates well too, so you can build up a larger block from several blanks without a visible joint line.
What it suits
- Relief carving — panels, plaques and lettering at a size you can finish in a sitting.
- Figure carving — the extra depth suits figures, birds in the round and deeper sculptural work.
- Model making — stable, lightweight stock for architectural and mechanical builds.
- Pattern making — dimensionally stable, easy to shape and easy to correct.
- Practice stock — cheap enough to cut into without wincing.
Working notes
Keep your tools sharp. Jelutong is soft, and a dull edge will crush the fibres rather than sever them, which shows up as a fuzzy surface on end grain. A light seal coat before final sanding firms up those fibres and gives you a cleaner finish. On the lathe, treat it as you would a soft pine: light cuts, sharp gouge, and a shear scrape to finish.
What to expect
Colour and grain vary a little board to board, and you may see the small latex canals that are natural to the species. That is timber, not a flaw. All our jelutong is sustainably sourced and kiln-dried to Australian standards.
We mill this narrow size in batches. Once it goes, the listing closes. We will restock when the next batch is cut, and if you need a size we do not list, email us — we cut to order where the stock allows.
