Jelutong Carving Wood, 75mm Thick

This is the heavier option in our Jelutong line: 75mm thick, 300mm wide, sawn to 300mm, 600mm or 900mm lengths. If you’ve worked our 50mm Jelutong blanks before, this is the same timber with more meat on it, for bigger relief panels and deeper carved forms.

Why carvers and turners reach for jelutong

Jelutong (Dyera costulata) has one of the finest, most even grains you’ll find in a carving timber. It’s soft and low density, so it’s gentle on your gouges and chisels, and it holds crisp detail in beads, coves and sculpted edges without tearing out. It sands to a silky finish and takes paint, stain or oil evenly, and the pale cream colour gives you a clean canvas for inlay work or contrast timbers.

What it suits

Relief carving: deeper panels and larger figures, where the extra thickness gives you more to work with.

Turned forms: bowls and larger spindle work that need more stock to start from.

Model making: stable, lightweight blanks for architectural or mechanical builds.

Mixed-media pieces: pairs well with darker carving timbers for contrast work.

What to expect

Colour and grain vary a little board to board, and longer lengths can carry a gentle natural curve. That’s timber, not a flaw. All our jelutong is sustainably sourced and kiln-dried to Australian standards.

This run came off the saw at 75mm, wider and heavier than our standard stock, and we don’t mill it often. Once it goes, the listing closes. We’ll restock when the next batch comes off the saw, so if you need this thickness for a specific job, it’s worth grabbing now.

Jelutong is a lightweight hardwood from Southeast Asia; if you want the full species background, Wikipedia has a solid rundown of Dyera costulata.

Because timber is a natural product, not all stock is ready to send immediately. Occasionally we need to mill your timber to the size you’ve specified before dispatch.
