American Black Walnut (Juglans nigra) is one of the most sought-after cabinet timbers in the world, and one of the timbers we’re asked about most. It’s native to eastern North America and prized for its rich chocolate-brown heartwood, often shot through with darker streaks and a pale sapwood edge that furniture makers either work around or use deliberately for contrast. What it’s good for: American Black Walnut works beautifully with hand and machine tools alike, takes a finish without much fuss, and holds fine detail — which is why it turns up everywhere from fine furniture and cabinetry to gunstocks, turned bowls, and small joinery pieces like boxes and handles. The grain is generally straight, though we do see boards with figure worth setting aside for a feature piece. What we stockWe carry American Black Walnut as dressed boards, sawn stock and turning blanks, in a range of sizes depending on what’s come through the yard. Because it’s an imported species, availability moves — if you need a specific length or thickness for a project, give us a call before you drive out and we’ll tell you honestly what’s on the racks.Don’t confuse it with: American Black Walnut is a different species to European Walnut and to some of the “walnut” trade names used loosely for other timbers — if you’re chasing a particular colour or grain for a matching project, tell us what you’re after and we’ll point you to the right board. We’ve been a specialty timber merchant since 1969, and Walnut is one of the species we’ve handled longest. We ship boards and blanks Australia-wide, or you’re welcome to come select your own timber in person at Mulgrave — our team can talk you through grain, moisture content and the right board for your project either way.
