New Guinea Rosewood

New Guinea Rosewood (Pterocarpus indicus) is imported from Papua New Guinea and South-East Asia, and is a distinct species from NSW Rosewood — different genus, different look, different working properties, despite the shared common name.Colour and character: New Guinea Rosewood has a rich, often variegated heartwood ranging from golden-orange through to reddish-brown, sometimes with darker streaking that gives individual boards real visual interest. It’s a moderately dense, workable timber that machines and finishes well, taking a fine polish that shows off the colour variation. What it’s good forWe see New Guinea Rosewood used in furniture making, cabinetry, joinery and turning — it’s a good choice where you want warmth and figure without the weight or hardness of some of the denser native hardwoods. Turners in particular like it for bowls and platters where the colour variation across a single blank can carry the whole piece. We stock New Guinea Rosewood as dressed and sawn boards along with turning blanks, though availability shifts with each import, so it’s worth checking current stock before you plan a project around it. We’ve been a specialty timber merchant since 1969 and have handled New Guinea Rosewood for a long time — our team can talk you through what’s currently on the racks and help you pick the right board for the job. We ship Australia-wide, or you’re welcome to select your own timber in person at Mulgrave.
