American Oak (Quercus alba) rough-sawn at this thickness has a different weight to it — heavier in the hand, more presence on the bench. We supply it rough-sawn: one pass over the planer brings up a clean, straight-grained reference surface ready to mark out. Available in 600mm, 900mm, and 1200mm lengths.

Why American Oak

Working Properties

• Grain: Straight, occasionally interlocked — planes cleanly with a sharp iron, routes well with the grain
• Hardness: Firm enough to resist denting in service; a confident hardwood for structural joinery
• Machining: Saws and routes cleanly; pre-drill near end grain to avoid splitting
• Finishing: Takes Rustins Danish oil well — two coats brings up the warm tones. EEE-Ultra Shine works for a buffed satin surface.
• Stability: Kiln-dried stock; movement in service is moderate and predictable
