Product Details

Burmese Padauk (Pterocarpus macrocarpus), dressed and ready for joinery. Heartwood arrives bright orange-red and mellows to a rich red-brown over years of light exposure, the saturated colour that makes Padauk a feature timber in mixed-species work worldwide. CITES Appendix II since 2019; this stock predates the restriction.

Available in two dressed widths. The narrower boards work as feature strips, inlay banding, and box sides where the colour carries the design. The wider boards open up for drawer fronts, cabinet door inserts, and decorative panel sections where you want a larger field of colour.

Why Burmese Padauk

Padauk earns its place in mixed-species joinery through saturation of colour no stain achieves. The bright orange-red that comes off the dressed surface fades gradually to a warm red-brown with light exposure, a shift that most builders consider an improvement. Dense, fine-textured, and well-behaved under tooling, the species holds moulded edges cleanly and finishes near-glassy with minimal grain fill. For feature work against pale timbers, Padauk is the species that makes the contrast land. We hold the dressed stock for the cabinetmakers and box builders who know how to use it.

Working Properties

  • Hardness: Firm. Medium-heavy through the section; holds detail under sharp tools. Carbide tooling carries cleanly; HSS needs frequent sharpening.
  • Grain: Interlocked with fine texture. Surface comes up near-glassy with minimal grain fill.
  • Machining: Machines cleanly with sharp tooling. Light final pass with the grain on flat-sawn faces to avoid micro-tearout. Glues and joins well.
  • Surface: Supplied dressed with a true reference face. Ready to mark out joinery or template.
  • Finishing: Rustins Danish oil preserves the colour well. Keep film-finish build-up thin; heavy coats can mute the red over time.

Limited Stock, Once It’s Gone

CITES Appendix II since 2019 means commercial Burmese Padauk is harder to source today. This stock came in before the listing, from a private collection, and there is no reorder path. Fixed quantity across both widths. Listed under From the Stacks. When either width sells through, that variation closes.
