Product Details
Lebanese Cedar (Cedrus libani, also known as Cedar of Lebanon) is one of the genuinely rare species in Australian timber supply. Slow-growing in its native mountain range, scarce at the source, and not on any regular import cycle. When it does come through, we hold what works for the joiners, chest-makers and small cabinet shops that ask after it.
This run is now available in two thicknesses, same width and length across both. The 25mm pieces are light and flat, suited to box panels, drawer linings, small framing components and aromatic lining work where the scent does the work. The 50mm pieces have the depth for lidded box blanks, face-plate turned platters, and relief carving stock. Expect warm colour variation across the run (honey through to deeper amber) and the occasional faint resin pocket or small natural knot. Character of the species.
Why Lebanese Cedar
This is the tree from antiquity, the cedar that supplied timber for temples and ships across the ancient Mediterranean. Today it’s a slow-growing mountain conifer; mature stands are scarce, and the timber is correspondingly uncommon. Fine, even grain. A distinctive aromatic scent, cleaner and more subtle than most expect. Warm depth of colour that oil draws out beautifully. Light for its size, easy under sharp tools, genuinely rewarding to work with.
Working Properties
- Hardness: Soft species. Keep edge tools sharp or the grain compresses rather than cuts.
- Grain: Fine and even; straight through most of this run. Low tearout risk on the face; end-grain responds well to a sharp block plane.
- Machining: Well-behaved at the table saw and router table. Sand to 180 before finishing. Coarser marks show under oil on a soft species.
- Turning: The 50mm pieces face-plate mount for shallow platters and lidded boxes. The scent comes up as the tool engages. A good afternoon’s work.
- Finishing: Rustins Danish oil lifts the honey tones with two light coats. Shellawax Cream polishes turned pieces without building a film that masks the grain.
