Product Details

These rosewood spindle blanks carry a scent that lingers in the workshop for weeks. NSW Rosewood has a distinctive rose-like fragrance when freshly worked, and turners come back for it as much for the smell in the shed as the finished piece.

What it is. NSW Rosewood is Dysoxylum fraserianum, a rainforest hardwood native to the NSW and southern Queensland coast, traded under this name across Australia for generations.

What you’d make with these rosewood spindle blanks at 45×45 and 70×70.

  • Turned pens and letter openers
  • Tool handles and chisel handles
  • Drawer pulls, knobs and cabinet handles
  • Bottle stoppers and small finials

Working notes

  • Density: ~705 kg/m³ — medium-dense
  • Hardness: rated moderately hard on the Queensland timber-properties register — comparable to Blackwood in the hand
  • Grain: fine, straight and even at this spindle scale
  • Surface: Supplied rough-sawn
  • Working: turns cleanly between centres, holds crisp detail for handles and knobs
  • Finishing: a coat of Danish oil brings up the warm colour without masking the grain

What turners say about it. Turners on the Australian woodworking forums mention the fragrance as the giveaway on the lathe — you can identify NSW Rosewood by smell before the shavings hit the floor.

The stack it came from. These NSW Rosewood spindle blanks are old stock — they sat in the back of the shed for many years before we recovered them and got them ready to sell — a limited parcel across three sizes.
