Every blank in this parcel is square-cut from Gmelina leichhardtii heartwood and priced to move — at $9 each they’re a cheap way to fill the practice bag or stock the bench for a run of projects. Why White Beech is an Ideal Spindle Timber

White Beech is a pale creamy Australian native with fine even grain and a subtly oily feel — the same fibre that kept the species in demand for boatbuilding for generations. It turns exceptionally cleanly, takes oil and wax finishes beautifully, and is kind to beginners while experienced turners appreciate how crisply it holds detail. Working Properties on the Lathe

• Janka Hardness: ~3.3 kN — soft to medium, forgiving under the gouge
• Grain: Fine and straight — clean cuts, minimal tear-out
• Turning: Long clean ribbons, superb detail retention on a spindle
• Finishing: Oil, wax and shellac all sit well — try Danish oil, EEE-Ultra Shine or Shellawax to pop the grain
• Stability: Natural oiliness gives good moisture resistance
