Overview
Tasmanian Oak is a commercial trade name for a blend of closely related eucalypt species, primarily Mountain Ash, Victorian Ash, and Messmate, milled together and graded as one. The result is a consistent, reliable working timber with a pale, clean appearance and good workshop manners. We supply it rough sawn: one face sawn, one face skip dressed, ready for your jointer or thicknesser.
Colour and Appearance
Heartwood runs from light cream through to soft pink, occasionally warm brown depending on the individual log. The grain is straight and even with a fine, uniform texture. Natural gum veins are a characteristic feature of the species and appear across most pieces. These are part of the timber, not a defect, and in finished work they add quiet visual interest to an otherwise clean board.
Properties and Performance
A reliable mid-range hardwood that machines cleanly, glues well, and accepts stains and finishes without difficulty. It is stable in service, bends reasonably well with steam, and holds fixings securely. The consistent grain means predictable behaviour through the jointer, saw, and router, with minimal surprises.
Perfect Applications
- Furniture making and cabinetry
- Drawer boxes and interior joinery
- Wall and ceiling panelling
- Shelving and workshop projects
- Interior architectural timber work
Working Characteristics
Machines cleanly with standard tooling. Glues securely and holds screws and nails well. Accepts a wide range of finishes, from clear oils through to stains and lacquers, and the pale base colour means stains read clearly. Mill the rough faces before use to expose the clean substrate beneath. Dress on site or bring it to us for DAR processing if needed.
Quality You Can Trust
Tasmanian Oak is one of the workhorses of Australian furniture and interior joinery for good reason. It is consistent, available, and well-suited to a wide range of structural and decorative work. Come and see us if you would like to discuss your project or check current stock.

Because timber is a natural product, not all stock is ready to send immediately. Occasionally we need to mill your timber to the size you’ve specified before dispatch.
