Queensland White Beech (Gmelina leichhardtii) from the coastal rainforests of Queensland and northern New South Wales. Fine grain, pale cream-to-straw heartwood, consistent density with almost no wild variation piece to piece. A carving timber that rewards the gouge and holds detail without fighting you.

This stock is available in two widths, same length across both. The narrower pieces are well-proportioned for small carved panels, jewellery-box rails, and pattern work. The wider pieces carry enough section for small lidded box blanks, shallow relief panels, and carved decorative components.

Why Queensland White Beech

White Beech is the pale, calm timber Queensland joiners have anchored on for over a century. Consistent piece to piece, honest grain, and forgiving for carving work, you can read it, set your tools, and work through a batch without surprises. The species holds crisp V-tool lines and fine gouge detail at a scale coarser natives struggle with. Under oil, the pale cream lifts to a warm straw. Under paint it disappears cleanly. The form does the talking, not the figure.

Working Properties

• Hardness: Medium. Dense enough to hold joinery and screws without splitting; comfortable under hand tools for extended carving sessions.
• Grain: Fine, straight, uniform. Minimal tearout risk on the face. Holds detail under V-tools and fine gouges.
• Machining: Machines and hand-tools easily. Glues and screws well. Takes paint as cleanly as any pale Australian hardwood.
• Carving: The 45mm pieces suit carved rails and small decorative components. The 70mm pieces have the section for shallow lidded blanks and relief panels.
• Finishing: Rustins Danish oil warms the pale tone without darkening it. U-Beaut EEE-Ultra Shine over the top for a soft satin. Paint-grade work needs no primer on a pale closed-grain species.
