Product Details

This is a one-off. Bark on, chalk-marked, and photographed as the exact log you’ll take home — not a species listing with generic dimensions.

Overview

Red Lancewood is Archidendropsis basaltica, a Queensland hardwood out of the dry scrub and basalt country, also known as dead finish. Mueller first described it as an acacia in 1859 and it has been shifted between genera more than once since, so you will still see lancewood sold as a wattle — it isn’t one. Dense and tight-grained regardless, and we set it aside for the turners on our books before it reaches general stock. Each round in this Reserve Selection release came off the same pull, but no two logs are the same — that’s the point of buying the log, not the species.

Colour + Appearance

Expect a deep reddish-brown heartwood, sometimes shot through with darker streaking, under a thin pale sapwood band. The bark stays on for this listing, so the outer face is rough and weathered — the contrast between that and the polished colour underneath is most of the appeal once it’s turned. Study the photos before you buy; colour varies piece to piece and the photos are the reference, not a stock shot.

Working Characteristics

Lancewood is dense and fine-textured, and it rewards patience on the lathe — steady cuts, sharp tools, and it takes a crisp, glass-like finish. These logs are dry and ready to use. We photograph what’s there rather than touch it up, so what you see is what you’re working with.

What You’re Buying

The dimensions listed are guaranteed minimums — the smallest diameter and the shortest length measured on the log, not an average. The log may run larger elsewhere along its length; it will never be smaller than what’s stated. The log chalk-marked with the letter you choose is the exact log you’ll receive.

Guaranteed minimum: 150mm diameter × 310mm length.

Turning it soon? We keep Rustins Danish Oil and Shellawax Cream on the shelf for finishing work like this, and the rest of our turning blanks live here.

This is a one-off round — once it goes, the listing closes.
